Combine semolina, tasty vegetables and traditional spices for this popular South Indian breakfast dish!

Ingredients

* Switch between cup/oz and g/ml in Account Settings*

  • Semolina Semolina 160g 1 cup
  • Sunflower Oil Sunflower Oil 2 tbsp 2 tbsp
  • Mustard Seeds Mustard Seeds 1/2 tsp 1/2 tsp
  • Chana Dal Chana Dal 2 tsp 2 tsp
  • Yellow Onion Brown Onion 1 1
  • Ginger Root Ginger Root 1 tsp 1 tsp
  • Water Water 625ml 2 & 1/2 cup
  • Frozen Peas Frozen Peas 75g 1/2 cup
  • Curry Leaves Curry Leaves 5 5
  • Chili Powder Chilli Powder 1/4 tsp 1/4 tsp
  • Table Salt Table Salt to taste to taste

Instructions

  1. 1.Firstly chop the onion and grate the ginger.
  2. 2.Heat oil in a pan, and add mustard seeds.
  3. 3.When it starts crackling, add ginger, curry leaves, chana dal and sauté for 1 minute.
  4. 4. Meanwhile heat 2.5 cups of water in a saucepan.
  5. 5.Add chopped onion to the pan and sauté until the onion becomes golden brown. Then, add green peas & red chilli powder.
  6. 6.When the onion becomes golden, add semolina and sauté until it turns light brown.
  7. 7.Then add hot water to the mixture and stir continuously on low heat.
  8. 8.Add salt to taste and cook until the water is absorbed and the semolina is cooked. Serve hot.
